WEEKLY PLAY TO LEARN

The Mile High Squash program will take place after school and on Saturdays during the academic school year which runs from August through May.   Participants will be taught the game of squash and receive academic skills instruction three times a week – twice during the week and once on Saturday.  In addition, participants will be required to participate in "Community Service Saturdays”.

Each session will have 16 participants and last three hours.  Each session will be divided equally between instruction in academic skills and instruction in squash.  While one group of 8 participants is studying or receiving academic skills instruction, the other group of 8 participants is playing squash.  After half the session is over, the groups switch so that each session every participant receives one and one-half hours of academic instruction and one and one-half hours of squash instruction.

Participants will be provided a healthy snack during each session.

TOURNAMENT PLAY TO LEARN

The participants will compete in squash tournaments on selected weekends throughout the year.  The highlight of the year will be a trip to Connecticut in March to participate in the National Urban Squash Team Championships.  This tournament is open only to members of urban squash programs such as Mile High Squash.  There are currently 10 such programs located around the country.

EXPERIENCE PLAY TO LEARN

Mile High Squash plans to have additional Saturday activities, such as activities conducted by Outward Bound, volleyball, basketball, and trips to museums.  These activities will allow the participants to get to know each other beyond the classroom and the squash courts.
